Our Origin

Victor's Story

Why this organization exists — and the ten-year-old boy who started it all.

Summer 2009

How it started

Emily Felsenthal was volunteering at a shelter in Chulucanas, a small town in northern Peru. She spent her days with the kids — running, laughing, dancing, learning their names and their stories. One boy stood out: Victor, ten years old, full of curiosity and mischief.

One afternoon she asked him the simplest question: what did he want to be when he grew up? He went quiet.

He simply replied that he had no future. He was poor, and there was no point in dreaming of anything different.

That answer followed Emily onto the plane home and through the months after. She couldn't accept that a ten-year-old had already given up on his own future.

In 2010, Victor's Vision was founded. Today more than 40 graduates have gone on to higher education — and 260 students are in the program right now.

Our Values

What drives us

Education

Learning is the most powerful tool for transformation. Every child deserves access to quality instruction, regardless of what their family can afford.

Community

Change happens inside relationships. We invest in long-term connections with students and families, not short-term interventions.

Opportunity

Students can't aspire to careers they've never seen. We help them dream bigger and then build the concrete path to get there.

The Piura Region

Why Chulucanas?

Chulucanas sits in the Piura region of northern Peru, where over half of children live below the poverty line and only 47% complete secondary school. For most kids educational support ends when school lets out — and for many, school itself is a luxury.

Our program meets students where they are: after school, with food, with caring adults, and with the tools to keep learning. We stay with them through graduation and beyond.
